COLIVET ORAL is a veterinary oral solution containing colistin sulphate at 2,000,000 IU per ml according to the manufacturer’s product information. Colistin belongs to the polymyxin group of antibiotics and has bactericidal activity against selected Gram-negative bacteria. It acts primarily by interacting with the outer membrane of susceptible organisms, disrupting membrane integrity and ultimately causing bacterial cell damage and lysis. A key practical characteristic of colistin after oral administration is its very limited absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, so its antibacterial activity remains concentrated mainly within the intestinal lumen.
The product information identifies susceptible Gram-negative organisms such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Haemophilus, Pasteurella and selected Pseudomonas species among its target spectrum. COLIVET ORAL is therefore intended for the treatment of selected gastrointestinal infections caused by colistin-sensitive bacteria, particularly colibacillosis and salmonellosis in calves, lambs, kids and poultry when the attending veterinarian considers colistin appropriate.
The solution is freely mixable with water, allowing practical administration through drinking-water systems. Correct preparation is essential. The amount of product added should follow the approved label, and actual water consumption should be monitored to help ensure that animals receive the intended dose. Drinking-water lines should remain clean, and medicated water should not be stored or used beyond the period recommended by the manufacturer. Clinical progress should also be monitored, because diarrhea and enteric disease can have viral, parasitic, nutritional or management causes for which an antibacterial drug would not be appropriate.
Responsible use of colistin is especially important because antimicrobial resistance to polymyxins is a significant concern in both animal and human health. COLIVET ORAL should therefore be reserved for cases in which a clear bacterial indication exists and where susceptibility is expected or confirmed. Culture and susceptibility testing are recommended whenever feasible, particularly in recurrent herd or flock problems. Approved species, indications, contraindications and withdrawal periods must be followed strictly.
COLIVET ORAL is for veterinary use only. This website description is intended to provide a clear product overview and does not replace the official package leaflet, local regulations or veterinary advice. Always follow the manufacturer’s approved dosage, treatment duration, withdrawal period, storage conditions and handling precautions.
